Nahid is leaving his position as advisor on Thursday!

A new political party led by the National Citizens Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement may be launched on February 24. Before that, Nahid Islam, the advisor to the interim government, will resign. A source close to the government said that Nahid Islam’s last working day in the government is going to be Thursday, February 20. There is a strong possibility that he will resign on that day.

The source said that preparations are underway to announce the party on February 24. Keeping that in mind, the time for Nahid Islam’s resignation is also approaching. February 20 is more likely to be his last working day. Earlier, it was reported that he will participate in the closing ceremony of the Youth Festival 2025 organized by the Press Institute of Bangladesh tomorrow, Wednesday. If the party announcement is delayed for some reason, then the time for resignation will also be delayed.

Nahid Islam will leave the ministry and join the ranks of the people and soon take charge of the new party, said Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the National Citizens Committee. At a program on Sunday, he said, our political party is coming within this February. We have called on our fellow street fighter Nahid Islam, who is one of the coordinators of the uprising, and who is the announcer of this uprising, to unite the whole of Bangladesh from the front lines again. For this reason, Nahid Islam should leave the ministry of that power and stand in the ranks of the people again. We have many hopes and aspirations.

It was almost certain that Nahid Islam would be the convener of the new political party. However, discussions are still ongoing around the post of member secretary. The leaders of the National Citizens Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have held meetings on the issue. According to the latest information received from the organization, Akhtar Hossain is more likely to be in this position. The leaders say that although there are discussions about the post of member secretary, Nahid and Akhtar are ahead in the race to get the leadership.

National Citizens Committee convener Nasiruddin Patwari, joint convener Ali Ahsan Junaid, chief organizer Sarjis Alam and anti-discrimination student movement convener Hasnat Abdullah are also in discussion for the post of member secretary.

Several leaders of the Citizens Committee told Kalbela that although a section of the party thinks Akhtar Hossain is a minus, most of the opinion is in his favor. Most of the leaders are in favor of Akhtar, who has made the greatest sacrifice in the movement and struggle in the past. Therefore, it has been decided to make Akhtar Hossain the member secretary initially.

Earlier, since last Saturday, the leaders of the Citizens Committee have been in conflict among themselves over the post of member secretary. There were fears of a split in the party before the announcement. Especially, the leaders and activists were divided into three groups over the post of member secretary. The members of the Citizens Committee, who have been involved in various movements centered on Dhaka University for a long time, support Akhtar. On the other hand, advisor Mahfuz Alam, who plays an important role in the policymaking of the Citizens Committee, wants Nasiruddin to be the member secretary of the new party. In addition, former Shibir activists are trying to bring Ali Ahsan Junayd, former president of the Dhaka University branch of Chhatra Shibir and member of the executive council of the National Citizens Committee, as the member secretary of the new party.

Some complications have arisen within themselves over the issue. The leaders are seen throwing mud at each other, especially on social media Facebook. In addition to the leaders of the Citizens Committee, advisor Asif Mahmud also participated in it. One side also threatened to form a separate party if a solution is not found for the member secretary post. In such a situation, the policy-making leaders of the two organizations met on Sunday. It is reported that an initial policy decision was made to make Akhtar Hossain a member secretary through discussions in the meeting. In addition, the leaders continued their discussions among themselves on Monday to make a final decision.

However, Samantha Sharmin, spokesperson of the Citizens Committee, does not see the issue as an obstacle to the party declaration process. She told Kalbela, we see this only as a Facebook discussion. There is no organizational work involved in it. However, some have behaved unorganizedly from the organization. We are moving towards announcing a party. The people are expressing their opinions, supporting us. We will be able to announce a party at the right time. The conflicts expressed on Facebook will not have any impact.

The leaders of the Citizens’ Committee have chosen Shaheed Minar as the place to announce the new party. The one-point declaration was made from this Shaheed Minar in the July mass uprising. After that, the 5-point declaration for state building was also announced from this place. As a result, this place is being chosen for the debut of the new party. Although Manik Mia Avenue in front of the National Parliament is also under discussion as an alternative.

Meanwhile, in the public opinion survey, the Citizens’ Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement took up the New Bangladesh program in your eyes. About 3 lakh people of the country gave their opinions online and offline in this program that started on February 5. Along with this online survey, the opinions of people of different classes and professions are being collected in all districts and upazilas. The student leaders are also receiving positive responses from the general public in the survey.

National Citizens Committee Joint Chief Organizer SM Shahriar told Kalbela, “We have received nearly three lakh opinions. We have also received opinions from all remote areas of the country, including online. From farmers, workers to lawyers and university teachers, everyone is giving their opinions. The work of determining everything about the new party is going on by prioritizing the opinions of the people.

It has also been learned that many people including civil society, businessmen, former government bureaucrats will join the new political party of the youth and students. In the meantime, they are starting to communicate with the top leaders of the National Citizens Committee and the anti-discrimination student movement. However, why did Quader
