Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah said that preparations for the national election have been underway since December.
On Tuesday (February 11), the AMM Nasir Uddin Commission held a meeting with ambassadors of 18 development partner countries, including UNDP. EC Sanaullah said this in a briefing after the meeting.
Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah said that the chief advisor had said in his speech on December 16 that if elections have to be held with a small amount of reforms, if there is a political consensus, then elections can be held by the end of 2025; and if a little more reform is given, then elections can be held by June 2026.
He said, we had said that we have to prepare by assuming the earliest date. Our position is still unchanged. We are preparing for December. We do not have different preparations, one preparation (national elections). If the government requests to hold local elections before the national elections, then the EC can consider whether the matter is possible.
Md. Sanaullah said, “In past experience, it takes about a year to hold five-level local elections. Not all our local government institutions have become ineffective, some have happened. It is not possible to give a specific timeline for these conditional issues. We think that the government will take into account the time we have and if they think that the national election can be framed at a certain time, then they will decide how much practice can be done. The commission will also be vigilant about anything that disrupts the national election.
He further said, the government will decide how much local government elections will be held, which institutions will be involved. Then we will be able to say whether it will affect the national election or not. It is not possible before that.
Earlier, at 11 am, ambassadors of 18 development partner countries, including representatives of the UNDP, met with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the commission building.
