The statement of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and fled in the wake of the student uprising, has created complications for India. Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has made such a comment.
He said this while talking to the media after unveiling a book cover at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club in New Delhi on Monday. Shashi Tharoor’s statement was reported in an online report of an English daily in Bangladesh.
He said that the statement of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has created complications for us. India should make it clear that they are committed to the welfare of all Bangladeshis rather than any particular party or group. India should be very careful about the events in Bangladesh. If a hostile government comes to power in the neighboring country, then India can be at risk. We should give the impression everywhere that as a friendly neighbor, we are committed to the welfare of the people of Bangladesh rather than our concern for any particular political party or any community.
Shashi also said that you cannot decide who will rule a particular country. You have to learn to work with them and that is what we have to do. I think we have to watch what is happening in Bangladesh very closely and carefully, because they are right next to us. I don’t think the current interim government in Bangladesh is hostile. But at the same time, we have to be careful.
