BNP is now entering the field on the Teesta issue

BNP is taking to the field this time to demand a fair share of Teesta river water and the immediate implementation of the Teesta Master Plan. The party will hold various programs including two-day rallies on February 17 and 18 in the areas along the banks of the Teesta river. Under the slogan “Jago Bahe, Teesta Bachai”, the program will be held at 11 points of the Teesta river, including Kaunia Bridge, Mahipur Bridge and Teesta Barrage Point, in Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Rangpur and Nilphamari.

According to party sources, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will inaugurate the program on the 17th from the Lalmonirhat railway bridge; which will be broadcast simultaneously at all points in the 5 districts through LED.

And on the night of February 18, the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman will be virtually connected to all points from London at the closing ceremony. BNP’s Rangpur divisional organizing secretary Asadul Habib Dulu will oversee the overall program.

BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan told Kalbela that various programs will be held throughout the day and night on February 17 and 18. These will include plays, jarigan, jatrapala, gambiras, speeches by leaders, and exhibitions. Khichuri made with rice and new potatoes will be cooked at spots for participating leaders and activists and the general public.

Meanwhile, BNP leaders believe that through this program, India can be put under political pressure in the coming days.

When asked, BNP central leader Asadul Habib Dulu told Kalbela that the Teesta River, which was once a source of happiness and prosperity, is no more, Teesta is now the cause of sorrow in the northern region. The water of this turbulent river is now flowing below the knees. Therefore, a fair share of water to protect the Teesta River and the people of its basin, is our long-standing demand.

Due to discrimination, we do not get Teesta water during the dry season. And the Teesta Master Plan was a project. Which China wanted to finance here. Under it, they would build a satellite city here, build housing, make an economic zone, and declare it as a tourist area. A survey was also done for it in 2016. But due to India’s objection, it was not implemented. We want that master plan to be implemented immediately.

Regarding the program, he said, the life stories of the people of Teesta, i.e. their joys and sorrows, will be presented through drama and music for two days, which will organize the people.

BNP had earlier held a long march from Dhaka towards Teesta in 2014. On April 22 of that year, the long march convoy started from Uttara in the capital under the leadership of the party’s then acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. On the way, road rallies were held at Kaliakoir in Gazipur, Tangail Bypass intersection, Sirajganj, Bogra, Gobindaganj in Gaibandha and Palashbari. The procession stopped in Rangpur on the night of April 22. The next day, on April 23, after the rally in Rangpur, the long march began towards Dalia Barrage in Nilphamari. The two-day program ended with a rally near Teesta Barrage in Dalia.
