The interim government’s chief advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, said that the interim government will organize elections as soon as possible. It could be in December this year. We are organizing everything little by little.
He said this in a session moderated by CNN journalist Becky Anderson while attending the World Government Summit in Dubai on Thursday (February 13).
In response to Becky Anderson’s question, Dr. Yunus said, we have formulated reforms for 15 different sectors. Law and order, police, constitution, elections and other reform commissions have prepared reports. They have made various recommendations. What we will do now is to build consensus.
He said, we are holding discussions with political parties for this. We will prepare a charter with the recommendations that everyone will agree on. We will implement them and hold elections. We will hold elections as soon as possible. It could be in December this year.
The chief advisor said, everything in Bangladesh was destroyed. We are sorting everything out little by little. This is our situation.
He said, the economy, society, administration, everything had collapsed. Our job is to rebuild everything. For example, the banking system had completely collapsed. 16 billion dollars have been laundered from the banks. Our reserves have gone to the bottom. First the economy, second law and order, then the institutions have to be fixed.
When asked about his desire to remain in leadership for some more time after the elections, Dr. Yunus said, I have made it clear before that after handing over power to the elected government, I will return to the work I was doing. Because I enjoy that work.
