Mural, sculpture and nameplate of Sheikh Mujib vandalized in Jessore

In Jessore, students vandalized the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman sculpture built by the Zilla Parishad, Sadar Upazila Parishad, Jessore Municipality, and the nameplates at at least 7 places, including the wall of the Victory Pillar in the Monihar area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (February 5) at around 10 pm.

Eyewitnesses said that first, the angry students came and beat them with hammers and broke the mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Muktijoddha Complex in the city. 25-30 youths came there on 10 to 12 motorcycles. They had iron pipes, hammers and axes in their hands. Then they also broke the mural of Sheikh Mujib in the Zilla Parishad premises. Later, they vandalized the nameplate of Sheikh Hasina that was the opening sign at the central Shaheed Minar of the old town.

Later, they broke the nameplates of Sheikh Hasina in at least seven to eight government institutions in the city. The mural of Sheikh Mujib on the Victory Pillar of the Liberation War and its nameplate have been vandalized.

Inspector (Investigation) of Jessore Kotwali Police Station Kazi Babul Hossain said, “I have heard that vandalism has been done in several places. It is not known who did it.”

The mobile phone used by Rashed Khan, the convener of the Jessore Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, was not received even after multiple calls were made.
