The mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman installed in front of the Sylhet District Commissioner’s office was demolished by the leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement with a bulldozer.
On Wednesday (February 05) night, after a rally at the city’s Court Point, the students demolished the mural with a bulldozer. After that, the leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, BNP and Chhatra Dal members took out protest processions in different areas of the city.
It is alleged that in protest of the announced program of the Awami League and the banned student organization Chhatra League, the members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement reached the premises of the District Commissioner’s office with a procession and demolished the mural. At that time, the protesters raised various slogans, including “Destroy, destroy”, “Mujibabad Astana” and “Abu Sayeed is fascinated, the war is not over”.
Maleka Khatun, spokesperson of the Sylhet district branch of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said that no memorial supporting the fascist Awami League can remain here. They have taken away the rights of the people of the country, we will not tolerate the signs of genocide and fascism.
Meanwhile, at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) around 12 midnight, students demolished the mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with a bulldozer. After this, a protest march was held at Medina Market in the city around 2 am.
Earlier, after the announcement of Sheikh Hasina’s online speech, the leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement announced a counter-program. They said that if Sheikh Hasina makes any statement, house number 32 in Dhanmondi will be demolished with a bulldozer.
A procession program was announced at Dhanmondi 32 on Wednesday afternoon. The procession was supposed to start from Shahbagh at 8 pm, but students and the public started gathering there from the afternoon. After the evening, a large crowd gathered there and anti-fascist slogans were heard.
At one stage, agitated students broke the gate of house number 32 in Dhanmondi and entered and started vandalizing. As a result, shops in the area were closed and traffic in the area was stopped. The army arrived to bring the situation under control.
The people participating in the program demanded that this house be marked as a center of tyranny, and that the sign be removed today.
Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, wrote in a Facebook post, “I see giving Hasina the opportunity to speak as India’s war against the anti-fascist people of Bangladesh.” Later in the evening, he wrote in another post on Facebook, “Bangladesh will be free from the pilgrimage site of fascism tonight.”
