Sheikh Hasina’s brother’s house demolished in Barisal

The residence of former Barisal City Corporation Mayor and Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah was bulldozed by students and mobs.

On Wednesday (February 5), they arrived in front of the Serniabat building on Kalibari Road in the city with bulldozers at around 12:30 am. Later, at around 1:15 am, they started demolishing the building.

Initially, the army set up a barricade at the gate of the building and requested the crowd to remain calm, but the students and mob broke the barricade and entered the building compound. At that time, the crowd started chanting various anti-Awami slogans.

Student Mahfuzur Rahman said that the Serniabat building was used as Sadiq Abdullah’s torture cell. He said, it is a place of fascism, and we do not want to have such a place in Bangladesh.

Another mob member, Yakub Mia, said that Sadiq Abdullah’s house is a symbol of exploitation. We don’t want to let it stay any longer. That’s why we have come to demolish this house. He said the army tried to stop them, but they crossed it and entered the building.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina, who fled the mass uprising, gave a speech on social media at 9 pm on Wednesday. In protest of her speech, bulldozers were brought to the Serniabat building in Barisal, like the one at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital Dhaka.

The Serniabat building on Kalibari Road in Barisal was the home of Abdur Rab Serniabat, the first council minister of independent Bangladesh and the son-in-law of Bangabandhu’s sister. He was killed with Bangabandhu on August 15, 1975. Since then, his son Abul Hasanat Abdullah and later Sadiq Abdullah lived in the house. Sadiq Abdullah fled the house on August 5. On that day, an agitated crowd set fire to the house, killing three people, including the panel mayor of the city corporation.
