Students, enraged by the announcement of Sheikh Hasina’s online speech in India after her ouster in a mass uprising, have vandalized and set fire to Sheikh Mujib’s house at 32 Dhanmondi in the capital. In addition, murals of Sheikh Mujib have been vandalized in various places in the country. The aggrieved students have erased the name of the Sheikh family in various universities of the country. In the wake of this incident, the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, gave a status on the social media Facebook.
On Wednesday (February 05), he gave a status at 11:55 pm.
In the status, the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami stated that the incitement of the fascist Sheikh Hasina, who has fled, is mainly responsible for the overall situation. In it, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman wrote, “It must be remembered that Sheikh Hasina never holds the people of Bangladesh in her heart. This is her hateful nature.”
Earlier, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced a counter-programme in response to the announcement of Sheikh Hasina’s online speech. Its leaders and activists announced that if Sheikh Hasina gave any speech, Dhanmondi No. 32 would be bulldozed.
A procession program was announced for Wednesday afternoon towards Dhanmondi No. 32. Although the procession was supposed to start from Shahbagh at 8 pm, students and crowds began gathering in Dhanmondi 32 area from the afternoon. By evening, a large crowd was seen there and various anti-fascist slogans could be heard being raised.
At one stage, the agitated students and crowd broke the gate of Dhanmondi No. 32 house and started vandalizing it. Due to the presence of the agitated students and crowd and the vandalism, the shopping malls around No. 32 were quickly closed. At one stage, traffic on that road was also stopped. Later, the army arrived and took control of the situation.
The crowd who came to join the program say that this house is marked as a pilgrimage site of tyranny. This sign of tyranny will be erased today with a bulldozer.
Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the anti-discrimination student movement, wrote in a Facebook post, “I see giving Hasina the opportunity to express her views as India’s war against the anti-fascist people of Bangladesh.” Later in the evening, in another post on Facebook, he wrote, “Tonight, Bangladesh will be free from the pilgrimage site of fascism.”
