All funding to South Africa will be cut off : Trump

US President Donald Trump has accused South Africa of treating certain classes of people very badly by confiscating land.  He said all funding to South Africa would be withheld until a full investigation took place.

There is a debate over land ownership in South Africa. After apartheid, whites own most of the farmland. Recently President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a new bill. Through the bill, the government will be able to seize property under certain circumstances.

The government says it does not allow arbitrary confiscation of property. Rather, an agreement must be made with the owner. However, many fear that the move could lead to confiscation of white property.

In 1980, the Zimbabwean government expropriated white-owned companies, which plunged the country into economic crisis.

South Africa has long been at odds over land distribution. Blacks’ land rights were eroded during white rule. After the end of apartheid, efforts were made to redistribute white-owned farmland to blacks. However, the move is strongly opposed by conservative right-wing parties. This, they felt, would discriminate against whites and could be economically harmful.

South Africa’s land dispute has intensified since Trump’s comments. His close advisor Elon Musk is a South African citizen.
